Evelyn Thomas

I started singing at age seven and then at age 13, I joined a band led by a Mr. Williams. (I looked like I was 18, so I was able to perform in a local bar.). The songs I sang included music by Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Four Tops, Ertha Kitt, Andy Williams, and others. I learned to sing by listening to jazz and music by Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, and Andy Williams.

My first professional performances in Miami was in 1984 at Backstreets, Casanova’s, Studio 51 and some other clubs. When I made my album “High Energy” in the United Kingdom, it sold over 16 million copies. Tom Haiden, who held the license for the album in the U.S., gave me a one-time check for $16,000. The amount, to me, was fine because that was a lot of money at that time.

I can’t really pick a favorite venue in Miami because the city has an energy that’s just Miami. The city has treated me well. I would consider a South Florida appearance.

Currently, I am now dedicating my time to my ministry and  to writing a play about my life. I also have some minor music-related projects.
